Build Love

It isn’t how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.

This couldn't be more true for the team of individuals that make up the Build Love Project team. If you haven't yet heard about this local not-for-profit, stop reading this immediately and visit the website now (buildlove.ca). This project gives me all the feels, and I'm humbled every day to get to play a small role.

In a nutshell, Build Love is a non-profit organization that provides a free home renovation to a family in Regina living with permanent non-typical challenges. I know, right? AWESOME!

In 2018, this labour of love was born when a young family, the Kennedy's, reached out to some local contractors for quotes to do a bathroom renovation to accommodate the physical needs of their young daughter. What started as a relatively simple request to provide some quotes turned into an incredibly generous community of local entrepreneurs, tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers coming together to provide a completely accessible home for Vienna at no cost to the family. No joke! This really happened. It's still blowing my mind.

This year, the Gorski family was nominated. Bonnie Gorski is one of the sweetest, most generous and caring women. Multiple sclerosis (MS) has taken over much of her mobility. Confined to her wheelchair, in a bi-level with a sunken living room, Bonnie found herself most days parked at her kitchen counter while her husband Stuart had to work. When he was at home, his role of caregiver often trumped his role as a husband. The inaccessibility of the home made it impossible to bring in help and made the prospect of Bonnie having to move out of their home away from her family a real possibility. With this nomination, the Build Love team got to work on a utterly accessible design, organized multiple community fundraisers with the help of incredibly generous sponsors, and managed an incredible pool of volunteers to make sure that Bonnie could live comfortably in her own home. Today, Bonnie can use the elevator to enjoy all the levels of their home, move freely from room to room, and can easily get outside to enjoy the fresh air.
